A NEW CHAPTER

I’ve knocked on doors.
I’ve hit rock bottom.
I’m still building.

I’m Gene Hess. After 21 years in door-to-door sales, I know that showing up matters—even when the answer is no.

My journey through sobriety gave that lesson a different meaning. The Sober Closer brings those two worlds together: honest conversations about sales, recovery, personal responsibility, and starting again.

No borrowed story. No perfect-life act. Just hard-earned perspective and a willingness to keep doing the work.

Close yourself first.

Before you ask somebody else to believe in you, do the work that gives you a reason to believe in yourself.

Read Gene’s lesson

I was once in a sizable meeting when the group was asked, “When does a person start closing the sale?”

Several people answered, “At the beginning of the demonstration,” or offered different points during the presentation. Finally, I raised my hand.

“The guy in the back,” they said.

My answer was simple: “The night before. It starts with your preparation. The first person you have to close is yourself.”

What I meant was that before you ask a customer to believe in you, you need to believe in yourself, your preparation, and the value you bring. That conviction doesn’t guarantee a sale, but it changes how you walk into the room.

Instead of putting all our attention on getting the client to say yes, we should ask ourselves: What does it take for me to become a better person—more prepared, more disciplined, more honest, and more dependable?

To me, that connects sales with sobriety and personal growth. The work starts before anyone else sees it.

Before you close the sale, close yourself.
